VET and Career Pathways



The Careers Room is located near the Creative Industries building in the Senior School in Room C32 and is vital to aiding Career Pathways for students. Mrs Dobbyn is located here to assist students with their many enquiries and also the procedures students are required to follow in regards to school based traineeships, apprenticeships, TAFE courses,  work experience and work placement. It is in the Careers room where the application process begins and courses are advertised to students at the appropriate time. The Careers Room Teacher Aide also guides students to various professionals within the school who provide information or professional advice regarding individual students Career Pathway. Students may also be directed to contacts outside the College who can be of assistance to them.  It is also the responsibility of the Careers Room to advertise to students Career Expos, Events and University open days. The Careers Room is also open for students to drop in with their enquiries and is helpful in also assisting students with the knowledge of how to access their one school account, email or their Learning accounts. 



School based apprenticeships and traineeships combine training with paid employment. Apprenticeships and Traineeships increase students employability skills is a pathway into the workforce. A traineeship must be completed by the end of year 12 and contributes credit points towards students QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) and students receive a nationally recognised qualification. Students who undertake Certificate III courses improve alternative pathways to the workforce or higher education.  An apprenticeship continues on after year 12 where students will work and study to complete their trade.

Nationally recognised certificate courses offered in the following programs contribute credit points towards students QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education). Students attend one day a week to the following programs.
The college has a Partnership with Schools programme with Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (MSIT). This partnership offers students to enrol in TAFE courses at the end of a school year for the following year. Students who undertake Certificate III courses improve alternative pathways to the workforce or higher education. The Vocational training that students receive provide them with the training and workforce skills to start their career.
Year 10 Students also have the opportunity at the end of a school year to apply to the STEP (Southbank Tertiary Entrance Program) at the Southbank Institute of Technology where students attend the Institute over two years (in years 11 and 12). Students are required to sit an ACER test as part of the application process and if successful they will be offered to study at a Certificate III or IV level in specific courses on offer.  The Program accelerates the completion of a Diploma qualification after year 12. 
Skills Tech TAFE Queensland provides various opportunities for students to study a nationally recognised trade qualification while they are at school. The courses provided offer a pathway for students to further study at TAFE or gain employment as an apprentice or trainee.
Work experience is offered to all students in Year 10 over a one week period. Information and the processing of paperwork required for this program is provided to students through the Careers Room. Students may also approach the Careers room to apply to the Principal for permission to attend specific work experience that contributes to their specific Career goals.
Work Placement is also processed through the Careers room which is often a requirement of a course undertaken by students.
A Career expo is organised to coincide with Information Evening where parents and students have the opportunity to investigate and to talk with a large number of universities, TAFE, Apprenticeship and Traineeship providers and other external providers.

During the school year students have the opportunity to attend many events in Brisbane that provide information that relates to their individual career pathway. These events will be advertised to students. Please keep checking this section of our website for information.
Currently students in Year 10 are seeking Expressions of Interest to undertake work experience. Below is a copy of the letter to parents, the Work Experience booklet which explains the procedures students are to follow and the Expression of Interest form which needs to be returned to the Careers Room before 26 March 2014.
