The Senior School encompasses students from Year 10 to Year 12. As with
the other sub schools, the Senior School has a Principal, Deputy Principal,
Heads of Curriculum, Year Level Coordinator, teaching staff and support

What are the new directions for Senior schooling in
Queensland schools?

Under the umbrella of ‘Queensland the Smart State’, the government
has developed the ‘Education and Training Reforms for the Future’ paper.
This document outlines the directions for all Queensland state schools.
The reforms include:

  • Legislative changes (from 2006)
    • making it compulsory for young people to stay at school until they are 16 or finish Yr10
    • requiring all young people to enter full-time work after this time or stay in education or training for: another 2 years
  • Year 10 as part of the transition to the Senior Phase of learning. This will include the development of Senior Education and Training Plans (SET Plans) for all students.
  • A broader range of learning to provide more options and flexible pathways for students to better equip them for further education and the world of work.
  • Fostering community partnerships, especially at a local level, to engage young people in experiences beyond school and to also help develop essential life long learning skills and ‘employability skills’.
  • Schools must be creative in the design of strategies, such as school hours, to encourage all students to participate in community programs. These programs (part of students’ SET Plans) may include part-time or volunteer work, accessing UNI or TAFE, and traineeships (SATs).

How is Calamvale’s Senior School curriculum designed?

The first year of Senior School is a transition year for students as they prepare to move into the more subject focused Years 11 and 12.

During Year 10, students study Mathematics, English, Science, Physical Education and History and a further 4 semester length subjects. Each subject will articulate to a subject in Year 11. Learning experiences will often be based around integrated and real world tasks, which focus on enterprise and innovation. This work helps students determine the best suited study fields and prepares them for Years 11 and 12 more defined subject areas.

  • Creative Industries –Visual Art, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Tourism and Accounting.
  • Food Technology –Hospitality
  • Performance –Music, Drama, Film, TV and New Media and Physical Education
  • Discovery and Technology –The Sciences, Computing, Graphics, Plastics and Electronics
  • Senior Studies –English, Mathematics, History, Geography
