Inquiry Learning

During Inquiry learning time, students enjoy a range of learning experiences drawn from areas such as science, history, geography, the arts and health. Inquiry learning foregrounds thinking skills and encourages students to connect with their prior knowledge and real world experiences. These units commence with a process of student-centred questioning, where space is provided for students to develop questions about aspects of a topic that they are curious about. During the following phases, students explore concepts, explain their understandings and findings using a range of communication tools and reflect on their learning in the context of the learning areas. The Inquiry learning phase at CCC aims to develop students’ capacity to create, collaborate, think critically, and communicate in a range of contexts, including using digital tools.

Year 6 Trade Fair

The Kookaburra and Lyrebird Learning Communities recently showcased the work from their last Inquiry unit to parents and staff from the College. Students successfully explained an alternate energy source justifying its suitability for a given community. The Inquiry Unit gave the students the opportunity to explore a variety of sustainable energy solutions and use a number of Higher Order Thinking (HOT) tools to interpret data, evaluate information and analyse alternative energy sources, considering trade-offs that financial decisions have on the broader community and the environment. The Multi modal presentations were of a high quality and all visitors were impressed with the way in which students were able to communication their knowledge and understanding. Well done to all Year 6 students and teachers!
